It’s just about that time of year again. Warmer weather means longer nights, outdoor dinners, and of course those pesky bugs. I’ve never been a huge fan of chemical solutions to anything, but can we just agree that bug spray is the worst. I mean seriously. It’s disgusting.
It’s filmy, stinky and just plain gross.
So naturally, when I started removing all of the toxic chemical clutter from my life, bug spray was at the top of my list (along with clorox wipes, but that’s a different story).
To date, I’ve made a few variations of my non-toxic spray, and the best part? They all work GREAT! No bug bites. (Can I get an Amen?!)
So, without further ado, here’s one of my non-toxic, natural DIY bug spray recipes!
First, choose your bottle. Because we are working with essential oils, I always opt for glass over plastic (a few of the oils are acidic and will break down the plastic over time!). I found these on Amazon and LOVE them (you’re welcome).
Next, it’s time to choose your base. I went with a grain alcohol, because they dry super quick and have very little smell. You can use Vodka or EverClear if you’re going this route. I’ve also used Witch Hazel, so if alcohol isn’t your preference, that will work too!
Finally, it’s time for your oils! The goal is to use about 30-40 drops of essential oils. Here’s the combination I found most effective:
- 10 drops Eucalyptus
- 10 drops Tea Tree
- 15 drops Citronella
- 5 drops Lemon
